We had a major change in plans. Instead of going to Cape Levique after one night we left Paul and Kerry in Broome, then Nanette, Ken, Glenn and I headed south to Barnhill Station on the west coast about 120 kms south of Broome to do some fishing and swimimg. The campground is on the cliffs overlooking The Indian Ocean and we are parked under shady trees and relaxed.
We had a resident, frilled neck lizard who sunned himself in the tree, totally motionless for hours on end. When a bunch of young children on Kimberley School of the Air camp surrounded him on the ground and got too close, he took off on back legs and up the closest tree, much to their delight and ours!
Nanette and I admired the deeply coloured cliffs and the stones littering the beach. They have been washed smooth by the wave action and colors range from pale pink and grey, through to deep purple and dark ochres. They are beautifully striated as well.
While we were doing that the blokes were catching weed and were not happy! There is no surf to speak of but the swimming is a delight in the warm ocean. An added bonus here is fresh baguettes and vanilla slices from the kitchen as well as pizza one night a week and ice cream!
Loved the facilities!
Many of our fellow campers are from further down the coast and one man has been here for 3mths and has a veggie garden as do many others. The best belongs to Mick who is growing every herb known to man, as well as tomatoes, capsicum, spinach and Asian greens. The soil is extremely rich and only needs water to grow almost anything.
Nannette and Ken have left us, moving down the coast. They aim to be home before us. It was sad waving goodbye as we have travelled far and well together, sharing lots of memorable adventures, many nights around the campfire stargazing and talking. We will miss them.
